Currently, Peter teaches beginning piano at Illumination Music Studio in Greenwood and maintains a small studio of private cello students from his home in Capitol Hill.

Peter has been lucky enough to learn from several great cellists throughout his life, chief among which are Walter Gray of the Seattle Symphony and renowned soloist and former University of Washington professor Saeunn Thorsteinsdottir.

Drawing from these important mentors, Peter's pedagogical approach focuses not only on the traditions of technical study that have served generations of cellists — from Dotzauer and Grützmacher to Popper and Piatti — but on developing a wide-ranging, expressive musicianship.

Building on the idea that technique should always be in service of the expressive requirements of a given piece, Peter emphasizes the musical reasoning behind technical problems and brings historical performance practice to bear on works from the Baroque to the present day.

With a deep commitment to treating the cellist as a whole person, Peter seeks to tailor his approach to each individual student, helping them to reach their musical goals through patient and sustained effort.

With years of experience teaching young children, Peter is equally comfortable starting new students and coaching advanced learners through high school and beyond.
